Research, Monitoring and Conservation of the Population of the Spotted Eagle in Ukraine
The main objectives of the project are to find the Spotted Eagle in the promising areas, determine its state, identify important sites of location of the species, identify factors that currently affect the Ukrainian population of the Spotted Eagle and conserve species' habitats.
The Spotted Eagle has a small population which appears to be declining therefore this species listed as Vulnerable (IUCN). The Spotted Eagle is assigned to the category of Endangered species in the new edition of the Red Book (2009). The lack of data does not allow the Ukrainian Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources to develop management and real strategy for the protection of the Spotted Eagle.
The main achievement of our work will be conservation of existing Spotted Eagle in the forest zone of the right-bank of Ukraine. It means that all the individuals will be revealed and key areas for conservation of this species will be identified. Those key areas will be included into the system of protected areas in Ukraine. Moreover, people of this region become aware of the value of the species and necessity to protect it. Information about the project will be distributed in social networks and mass media. Approximately 1000 people in the region will be covered by educational program on Spotted Eagle protection.
Main project activities will be following items:
to estimate numbers of the Spotted Eagle in the forest zone of the right-bank Ukraine;
to investigated areas where the Spotted Eagle was discovered to search for nests;
to reveal numbers of successful nests, and determine the percentage of fledglings which left the nests;
to develop and conduct training and educational seminars for volunteers on Spotted Eagle protection;
to distribute information about the project and local participation in social network and mass media.
In the course of the project implementation the database will be created concerning distribution of the Spotted Eagle on a vast territory of the forest zone of the right-bank Ukraine. Gathered information will help the Ukrainian Ministry of Ecology to determine breeding sites of the species for the protection. It will be definite the first step towards the conservation of the spotted eagle and prevention of nest site destruction.
