Conservation of the Population of the Spotted Eagle (Aquila clanga) of the Forest Zone of Ukraine
Researches and monitoring of known nests, protection of nesting sites, attracting birds using artificial nesting platforms, the search for new areas of habitat Greater Spotted Eagle.
The current project incorporates field work that includes:
1. Establishment of a long-term monitoring schemes to improve understanding of population trends and state of identified pairs;
2. Expansion of search for new populations or individuals to new territories, namely Lviv, Rivne, Wolyn and Zhytomyr regions and Chernobyl zone.
The emphasis will be made on the development of conservation action plan in order to minimize disturbance and to protect species habitats. Action plan will include among other things official approval of the establishment of conservation area (Ornithological zakaznik) based on the received data. The documentation for establishment of zakaznik was submitted to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources during the previous Rufford project, but because of the political situation in Ukraine, it was not approved. The changes in the government and in the Ministry give us opportunity to receive approval for the planned territory. Moreover, the new territories will be monitored and information received will also be used as an argumentation for the development of new conservation areas. One of the threats for Spotted eagle is illegal logging, so we will work with local communities and forestry agency on awareness raising and on current and additional monitoring territories. In order to abate threats and to attract species to nest, artificial nests on the new territories will be constructed. In order to share results and experience participation in international conference and submission of scientific papers to local and international scientific journals will also be part of the project.
