A tree nursery was built in a farm located in the buffer area of the Iguazú National Park. In this tree nursery the saplings of native species used in restoration treatments in monocultures of yerba mate were grown.

Forest restoration is key to the development and conservation plans in the Upper Parana Atlantic Forest. To allow conservation at a regional level it is necessary to restore forest corridors that connect forest patches. This is only achievable if it is complemented with strategies that improve the quality of life of the local communities.

The general objectives of this project are:

a) to evaluate different techniques of forest restoration to determine the most appropriate ecological and economic methods to apply in this region;

b) to develop a model for the recovery of the forest productivity based on the sustainable use of the palmito and the yerba mate – two native species that represent an important economic resource for local inhabitants;

c) by implementing (a) and (b) above, to restore forest surfaces in a key area for conservation, thus contributing to the re-establishment of connection of forest patches.
