The overall aim of the project is to assess the distribution and to identify conservation zones for the large mammals in the highly fragmented Highwavy environs of southern Western Ghats.
Highwavy environs is home to certain remnant patches of wet forests and those patches have been severely fragmented and over exploited for raising few economic crops and plantations. Five decade old observation on mammals states that the landscape is abode of several rare, endemic and endangered species, however, their current distribution and population status in this landscape is remains unknown and thus it lead to indifferent and rude towards their conservation and management in the landscape. Considering the ecological service and diverse mammalian species of the landscape, the project was proposed to address few issues viz.
