The project is designed to improve and strengthen monitoring systems for adaptive management and protection of forest elephants in Omo Forest Reserve, Southwestern Nigeria. Previous efforts and initiatives on conservation and protection of the elephants have helped reduced elephant poaching and human-elephant conflict in the project area. However, there is need for continuous monitoring, constant stakeholders’ engagement and policy support for forest elephant conservation. Recent development in Omo Forest Reserve have pointed to the fact that the forest elephant population is expanding its home range beyond the “Erin Camp” (elephant sanctuary ≈ 30,000 ha) and the declared biosphere reserve (≈ 130,500 ha) frontier of the Reserve. Therefore, the present endeavour will carry on monitoring, capacity building, education, awareness, and other programmes as continuation of previous RSGF projects for adaptive management and protection of forest elephants in Omo Forest Reserve.

The project will help secure and maintain the habitat of the elephant including their migratory corridors within the project area. It will also help consolidate the education and awareness raising programme on elephant conservation and management among key stakeholders including policy makers, local communities and other interest groups.

Specifically, the effects of the project would manifest in: (1) Recruitment and training of elephant monitoring teams in the project area; (2) Enhanced patrol activities and establishment of monitoring systems for protection of elephants within the project area; (3) Education and enlightenment of farmers on effect of their activities on the forest landscape as well as safety precautions for them when they get into contact with elephants; (4) Installation of signage to indicate elephant corridors in order to create more awareness among the people; (5) Production of a documentary that highlights the concept of human-elephant conflict and; (6) Sensitization materials such as fliers and handbills on elephant conservation.
