Implementation of Measures for Conservation of Sea Turtles on the Santa Luzia Island
Conservation Status for Sea Turtles Caretta caretta in Santa Luzia Island (Cabo Verde)
This project aims to create a hatchery for the eggs of sea turtles Caretta caretta on the Santa Luzia Natural Reserve in order to prevent them being eaten by the ghost crab and to form a data base on nesting beaches of the island.
Cape Verde has the third largest population of Caretta caretta turtles, which is a species considered endangered (EN) in the IUCN Red List. There are many threats to this species, but in Cape Verde the human predation is one of the factors that most threaten the species.
The natural hazards are also varied and the ghost crab on land is the worst because they prey the eggs in the nest, causing massive destruction of several thousand eggs. To prevent this massacre are created a hatchery area where the eggs are translated and placed in a safe zone (the nests are surrounded by a net just beneath the sand), providing a very high survival rate. The constructions of these nurseries also have the advantage of being able to take biometric data on important nesting species and protect the new-borns from other predators such as birds and cats. This project aims to install a hatchery on the island of St. Luzia that despite belonging to a Marine Protected Area is infested with ghost crab and cats and many of the nests are destroyed.
