Conservation on Genus Paramesotriton (Caudata: Salamandridae) in Vietnam Based on Ecological Niche Modelling and Phylogeography
Assessing Home Range, Microhabitat Selection, and Raising Community Awareness for Conservation of the Threatened Guangxi Warty Newt in Northern Vietnam
Guangxi warty newt (Paramesotriton guangxiensis) was described in 1983 in Guangxi Province, China (Huang et al., 1983). In Vietnam, P. guangxiensis is currently known only from Phia Oac – Phia Den National Park (NP), Cao Bang province (Sparreboom 2014; Tran 2021). The species is categorized as Endangered (EN) in the IUCN Red List (2021) because of its restricted distribution as well as continuing declined population and their habitat. The warty newt is also listed in CITES Appendix II and protected by Vietnamese Law in Degree 06/2019/NĐCP. The threats to the species are mainly habitat loss, degradation and hunting for wildlife trade (Tran 2021). However, only a little is known about Guangxi warty newt in Vietnam. Few preliminary surveys have been conducted on the endangered newt in Phia Oac – Phia Den NP but only focusing on collecting presence localities or confirming the taxonomy (Bernardes et al., 2021; Tran 2021), while the population status has not been assessed yet. Tran (2021) also generated the potential distribution for the whole of northern Vietnam with coarse-scale environmental variables. It should be noted that fine-scale habitat suitability map needs for assessing extinction risks and proposing appropriate conservation strategies for Phia Oac – Phia Den NP when its biodiversity has been dramatically threatened due to habitat loss and disturbance (Tordoff et al., 2000; Tran, 2021).
Especially, our recent survey also showed that nothing to know about the awareness level on conserving warty newts of local communities around Phia Oac – Phia Den NP because no conservation project has been conducted on raising awareness of local communities (Tran 2021). Therefore, an intensive survey in population size, distribution of Guangxi warty newt, and a conservation program on enhancing awareness of local communities for warty newt conservation in Phia Oac – Phia Den NP is necessary and urgent.
In the project, we will focus on the following objectives:
Objective 1: Assessing the population size of P. guangxiensis in Phia Oac – Phia Den NP, northern Vietnam.
Objective 2: Developing the fine-scale habitat suitability map for P. guangxiensis in northern Vietnam.
Objective 3: Identifying the main threats to P. guangxiensis in Phia Oac – Phia Den NP, northern Vietnam.
Objective 4: Implementing awareness-raising activities on warty newt conservation in Phia Oac – Phia Den NP, northern Vietnam.
