The goals of the project will determine the status of population, distribution and threats of Northern buff-cheeked crested gibbon in Song Thanh NR to propose options for long-term conservation of the population at the sites.

The Northern yellow-cheeked gibbon (Nomascus annamensis) occurs in southern Lao, central of Vietnam and north - eastern Cambodia. The population has dramatically decreased in Vietnam due to hunting and, habitat loss, and wildlife trade. However, the total population size of Northern buff-cheeked gibbon in Vietnam is not known. This project aims to assess the status, distribution of, key threats to the gibbon, and propose the recommendation for conserving gibbon in Song Thanh Natural Reserve, Quang Nam province.

Song Thanh NR is located in the central of Vietnam, covering an area of 752.74 km2, and dominated by evergreen forests that cover 95% of the area. It's assessed as a critical area of the Central Annamites Priority landscape of the Greater Annamites Ecoregion. It’s one of the largest areas of contiguous conservation coverage in Vietnam.

In the project, we will assess the level of awareness on the gibbon of local communities and forest rangers of Song Thanh NR. And then, we also assess the population status and distribution of Northern buff-cheeked gibbon in Song Thanh NR, and identify the threats to the gibbon population and its habitat. Finally, we will provide an appropriate recommendation for species management and conservation in the study area.
