The project aims at harmonizing the conflicting institutional mandate within the boundaries of overlapping habitats through an integrative approach from surveys and resource-mapping among other methods, to contribute towards conflict resolution, and establishment of co-management process to enhance ecological knowledge which will result in best management practice of biodiversity in overlapping habitats. It is hoped to increasing community role and participation, and explore new anthropogenic activities which were not identified in the Katonga Catchment Management Plan. The project intervention will facilitate the management of overlapping habitats, conducting rapid biodiversity assessments of important species, and the formation of community working groups to discourage illegal activities such as cultivation in the wetlands, forest degradation, and riverbanks encroacher that degrade overlapped habitats and improve sustainable management and allow self-restoration. Project monitoring tools that capture both qualitative and quantitative data will be adopted to measure the impact of the project interventions at all levels.

The project intends to harness silent conflicts occurring between direct natural resource dependent communities and government institutions involved in management. By eliciting bold and innovative approaches, science and poverty alleviation ideas to better conservation by addressing the complex sustainability challenges facing overlapping habitats. It builds on the notion that communities in central Uganda must urgently address institutional responsibilities and efforts to establish best use of overlapping habitats.
The project builds on previous projects being implemented by AUC which addressed co-management of highly degraded protected forests. The project design intervention identified hot sport in the districts of Mpigi, Butambala and Kalungu Districts, where there is need for coordinated institutional mandate to stop threat of overlapping habitats in R. Katonga and L.Victoria catchments.

The project team will use inter-cultural dialogue approach to explore existing conflicts among different stakeholders, share and transfer existing knowledge to inform current conflicting roles, resolve the conflicting roles, and shift the perceptions and opinions of key stakeholders working toward co-management of overlapping habitants in Katonga river catchment.
