Initiating and Consolidating Community Led Integrated Fish-Farming (Polyculture) to Promote Conservation of Endangered Fish in Lake Kanyaboli
Dwindling fish stocks can have disastrous implications for the fishermen, families, and the ecology of Lake Kanyaboli. The project will put in place programmes to educate, regulate and advocate for better fishing practices. This will be achieved through local networks and empowerment of local communities. There will be information sharing especially from adjacent communities in Uganda and Tanzania for better practices.

Through the community base fish monitoring we will be able to keep an uptight trend and monitoring scheme whereby the different fish species caught by the fishermen will be assessed. This data will also be synchronised with the ones from the women selling the fish. The data will be sent to the Fisheries department from which much more appropriate actions can be taken.
Increased fish species diversity in Lake Kanyaboli and its environs: This will be ensured through improvement after the Fish Conservation Committees. The increased high fish diversity will show the role that can be played by the community in conservation of fish. Most of the resources are found among very poor rural communities whose livelihood depends solely on the exploitation of these resources. Sustainable conservation and development depend heavily on strengthening the capacity of local individuals and communities to implement conservation initiatives.
Improved acquisition, packaging and dissemination of information: Creating an informed society has been recognised as a prerequisite to conservation efforts. Information will be made available to stakeholders at different levels. This will include production and distribution of materials, booklets, charts and factsheets, brochures, geo-referenced maps to be used in biodiversity conservation efforts. Information dissemination activities will be carried out through workshops aimed at increasing awareness of extension agents, communities, and students in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.
Improvement of implementation of policies, laws and regulations: The success of all these interventions will depend on the availability and implementation of the appropriate policies, laws and regulations to guide biodiversity conservation and management. Through diversification of income generating activities we envision to promote the improvement of living standards of the community. The creation of agro-ecological activities will ensure the easing of pressure on fish stocks and species.
