Vladimir Ovchinnikov

The goal of the project is to carry out a comprehensive environmental survey of the Langry and Bolshaya watersheds which will serve as a basis for a conservation plan to be developed together with representatives of local communities. The plan will be used in working with the regional government to create a protected area encompassing these two basins in northwest Sakhalin island.

Siberian taimen on the Langry River. Taimen caught during expeditions were released unharmed after data (length, weight, fin clips, scales) was collected.

Protected area formation is the most effective means of producing a long-term balance between conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in Russia. Achievement of such a balance is an increasingly pressing need on Sakhalin, where the fast pace of extractive industry development is threatening once-pristine ecosystems. Salmon are an ideal focal point for conservation activities on our island, as they support over 190 other terrestrial and aquatic species. The creation of salmonid protected areas on Sakhalin will conserve a resource that is key to our economic livelihoods and cultural well-being, as well as preserve entire intact ecosystems.

Snorkel surveys were conducted during the expeditions to assess fish biodiversity and abundance.

The conservation plan prepared through this project will serve as the environmental and social basis for the creation of the Langry-Bolshaya protected area. Documentation explaining the basis for PA creation is a necessary part of the legal process according to Russia Federation law. The plan will also provide a realistic strategy for the study and conservation of this area with the active involvement of the local population, including indigenous groups.
