Development of Conservation Strategies for the Wild Edible Orchids in Tanzania
The aim of the project is to promote conservation of the wild edible orchids in Tanzania through integration of in situ and ex situ strategies as well as communities participation.
The overall goal is to contribute to the conservation of wild edible orchids in Tanzania, through integration of in situ, ex situ strategies and promote local communities participation in the conservation.
The specific objectives includes:
+ To develop effective in situ conservation and management interventions for the wild edible orchids in Makete and Mbinga districts;
+ To develop appropriate ex situ conservation strategies for the edible orchids in Tanzania;
+ To promote local communities participation in orchid conservation.
The project aim to implement the activities recommended in the second phase of the study: that is field biodiversity survey in Liwili Kitesa forest to provide biodiversity data for supporting conservation measures by the policy makers, management of forest reserve, establishment of orchid monitoring plots, implementation of the orchid restoration, continue with propagation trials, farmers training and awareness creation. The project is targeting the Kituro National Park, Liwili Kitesa Forest Reserve and Poroto Mountain ranges in Makete, Rungwe and Mbinga Districts in Tanzania.
