Tibetan gazelle Procapra picticaudata is endemic to the Tibetan plateau, and was once widely distributed across Tibet and eastern Ladakh. Today, in Ladakh, it faces extinction, with an estimated 50 animals surviving precariously. Hunting caused its drastic decline in the last century, and excessive livestock grazing prevents its recovery today.

This project aims at:

(i) generating an ecological understanding of the species and re-assessing its population in Ladakh;

(ii) involving the local herding communities to protect the gazelle’s habitat and facilitate its population recovery;

(iii) spreading awareness of this fascinating species that faces extinction.
